SH2 Pahiatua Culvert

From Monday 6 May, crews are planning to carry out about 5 weeks of drainage improvement works in this area, including installing a new culvert. Crews will be working on SH2, between Pahiatua-Pongaroa Road and Short Road, and plan to be onsite between 6am – 6pm Monday to Friday.

For the safety of crews and motorists, a short section of SH2 will be reduced to one lane with stop/ go and a 30km/h speed limit in place for the duration of these works. At times, traffic signals will be used, with delays of 10 minutes expected.

Crews aim to complete this work by 10 June. An important component of this work programme is dependent on weather, and in the event of bad weather, the programme may be extended.

SH3 Whangaehu River Bridge maintenance works:

From Tuesday 7 May, between the hours of 7.30am – 5.30pm, Monday to Friday, stop/go traffic management will be in place at Whangaehu River Bridge on SH3 due to bridge strengthening works. A reduced speed limit of 30km/h will be in place during these daytime work hours, and delays of up to 10 minutes can be expected.

This daytime traffic management is expected to be in place for about 7 weeks. Outside of work hours, traffic management will be removed, and the road will operate as normal.

Traffic queues will be closely monitored, and motorists are advised to expect changes in traffic management as crews aim to minimise vibrations on the bridge and delay times for travellers.

All of the work is taking place underneath the bridge and while it won’t be visible to motorists passing by, we’re reminding people to drive carefully and adhere to the temporary traffic management, speeds and signage in place.

The overall project is expected to be completed by September this year.

SH1 Marton

From Monday 29 April, drainage improvement works are planned to take place on SH1 underneath the railway overbridge, near Calico Line. A pump station is being installed which will help reduce the amount of surface flooding that can occur in this area.

An important phase of this work is planned to take place between Monday 29 April – Wednesday 8 May, with crews working between 8am - 5pm weekdays, including Saturday if needed. During these daytime work hours, the northbound lane of SH1 will be closed with a detour in place.

This northbound detour route is Wings Line, French Street, Matai Street, Main Street, Nga Tawa Road, Calico Road and back to SH1. Southbound traffic will continue through site on SH1, with a reduced speed limit in place. A partial road closure and detour in this area is needed due to the corridor width and health and safety requirements.

The northbound detour is HPMV approved and is expected to add 5 minutes to journey times. The detour will not be in place outside of worktimes.

The overall project is expected to be completed by late June, with much of the work occurring off the state highway. Temporary traffic management, including a reduced speed limit through site, will remain in place throughout the duration of this project for the safety of crews and motorists.

Night-time roundabout works

On Sunday 28 April between 8pm – 6am, contraflow traffic management will in place on Pukenui Road, that leads into RNZAF Base Ohakea, as crews carry out paving works.

On Monday and Tuesday night (29 – 30 April), between the hours of 8pm - 6am both nights, Stop/Go will be in place on SH1/3 with delays of up to 10 minutes expected. Crews will be carrying out paving works on the approaches to the roundabout during these times.

Daytime pipe relocation works (north of Bulls Bridge)

From Monday 29 April to Friday 3 May, between the hours of 7am and 5pm, a lane shift and a reduced speed of 30km/h will be in place just north of the Bulls Bridge for water main pipe relocation works. This lane shift involves northbound traffic using the nearby slip lane and southbound traffic using the north lane. At the end of each day, this temporary traffic management will be packed up and the road will return to normal. This work is part of the Ohakea Commercial Vehicle Safety Centre (Ohakea CVSC) project.

Shoulder closures will also be in place on SH1/3 near Wightman Road and Frecklington Road during the above daytime hours for preparation works on new digital signage board locations for the new CVSC.

Further works in May

In May, crews are planning to return to the Bridge Street site for asphalting works. Details will be communicated closer to the time.

Major roadworks on Railway Road and Botanical/College intersection soon

Palmerston North residents, commuters and freight companies are encouraged to avoid two major streets and intersections over the coming weeks and months.

Railway Road is under a 24/7 road closure from Monday 22 April.

This job includes rebuilding and upgrading the surface of the road so it can continue to be used by freight and heavy vehicles. Road closures are starting from Monday 29th April and the job will take about two months.

We are closing the road to enable contractor Fulton Hogan to rebuild the road as quickly as possible from the rail bridge to the entrance of, but not including City Fitness. This means they can work two shifts per day, from 5am to 11pm.

All traffic will be detoured other than vehicles accessing Carousel Confectionery and Citi-Box Containers. The intersection of Francis Way/Railway Rd will be closed, however, access at the Tremaine Avenue end remains unaffected.

The long-term plan is to complete the entire section from the rail bridge to Tremaine Avenue, however, this work will be staged in three sections over multiple years.

VMS boards are in place to assist with detours.

Parts of the Botanical/College intersection will be closed for two weeks

We are upgrading the traffic signals at the intersection of College and Botanical Street from Monday 15 April.

Each side of the intersection will be closed for a couple of days to enable Fulton Hogan to install a right-turn arrow.

The first section is on Botanical Road on the side of West End School. The second section is on College Street by West End School side. The third section is on College Street at the Awapuni end.

VMS Boards are in place to assist with detours.
