Glen Mackay

- Orion Haulage Ltd

Glen Mackay joined the Board of NRC in 2021 after spending 22 running his specialist stock feed transport business, Orion Group, in Morrinsville.

Glen grew up around trucks, as his father owned Stockley’s Transport in Te Aroha and he spent his youth going for rides, washing trucks and generally helping out around the yard. After getting his HT License at 18 he realised trucking was going to be his future and formed Orion Group in 2001. The Group now employs 165 permanent staff members (plus seasonal workers) and operates a fleet in excess of 120 trucks. Located in Morrinsville in the central Waikato, the Orion Group operates a nationwide network which provides specialist services to a wide range of New Zealand based customers (primarily from across the poultry, pig, and dairy sectors).

Glen is passionate about giving back to the industry and after growing up observing his father in the role of President of RTA region 2, felt that the time was right to embark on his own governance journey as part of the Board of NRC. Governance provides an opportunity to engage with other likeminded business leaders and presents a platform through which to be challenged. Being exposed to new ideas and alternative views from people expert in areas outside of transport but connected to the industry puts me in a stronger position to help make a positive difference for the industry over time.

Trucking is certainly not going anywhere, as long as people keep consuming, the industry will need to keep delivering. There are many challenges facing the industry, but bureaucracy is often what is the first stumbling block. Being able to help break down the bureaucratic barriers and smooth the way for action is one of the key reasons Glen joined the NRC Board.

Glen is married to Lisa, with three teenagers who are all sports mad and as a family they enjoy boating, fishing, diving and travelling – as long as it is to somewhere warm.
